Kid's UGG CozyACCRA, Nov. 29, () -- As the world prepares to mark the World AIDS Day on Thursday, Ghana's Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Samuel Ofosu Ampofo has made a passionate call for more action on the fight against the pandemic to achieve a zero infection rate in the country.Ghana's HIV/AIDS epidemic is classified as a low prevalence epidemic at 1.5 percent with pockets of high prevalence in certain populations. But the minister, who was addressing the 7th annual HIV Partnership forum appeal here on Tuesday, said: "This does not in any way suggest that the battle has been won but rather should encourage us to strive to achieve a zero prevalence rate to ensure that all citizens in the country are able to contribute their quota to the overall national development."As part of fulfilling its mandate to coordinate and manage the national HIV/AIDS response, the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) at the end of every year convenes a partnership forum and business meeting to review progress on the implementation of HIV/AIDS programs and activities. It also uses the forum to build consensus and galvanize technical and financial support for the next phase of implementation. The minister observed that the HIV/AIDS pandemic had been proven beyond all doubts as a threat to national growth and development, demanding global consciousness and concerted efforts to mitigate its spread in the society. He added that governments everywhere had been finding a pragmatic means to ensure that HIV/AIDS was reduced to the barest minimum "if not completely eradicated".Ampofo added that HIV/AIDS had consequently been on top of the agenda of the government of Ghana, making the GAC a supra- ministerial and multi-sectoral body under the president of the republic to coordinate national response."This year's forum, which is seventh in a series, is timely and I am highly positive and convinced this forum will provide the platform and opportunity for the GAC, the development partners and other stakeholders to delve deep into their arsenals and gather the needed resources to stem the tide of HIV/AIDS menace and the threat it poses to our forward march to sustaining middle-income status," Ampofo said. The Director General of GAC, Angela El-Adas, announced that the commission organized the first ever strategic information dissemination forum in March to provide recent updates on research and strategic information on HIV/AIDS in Ghana.According to her, the same month saw the cooperation from the European Union (EU) and the UNAIDS to organize a workshop for all partners and stakeholders for validation of the technical support plan.He thanked all partnering organizations for their support in the fight against the dreaded disease during the year.In her message to the forum, the UN Resident Coordinator, Ruby Sandhu-Rojon said there had never been a time in the history of the disease that the world had reached a moment it is able to stand up in the conviction that the end of AIDS was possible."Let all work together towards getting a zero new infection s,. Zero AIDS related diseases and Zero AIDS discrimination," she urged. Special Report: World AIDS Day 2011
VANCOUVER, March 22 () -- The Canadian province of British Columbia said Thursday that it has launched a campaign to ensure that every home has a working smoke alarm. The campaign is part of a broad initiative to reduce fire-related deaths and injuries, the local government said, noting that nearly 70 percent of the some 11,000 residential fire scenes from 2006 to 2011 either had no smoke alarm or had inoperative ones.A recent research jointly conducted by local fire services and university academics shows that the death rate in a fire when a working smoke alarm is absent is 74 percent greater than when a functioning one is present."Our government is committed to improving the safety of British Columbians, and the research shows us that smoke alarms play a critical role in saving lives and protecting property," said provincial Minister of Justice and Attorney General Shirley Bond. The campaign will also include developing a school-based curriculum for fire prevention and working with federal politicians to create a national smoke alarm day, according to the provincial government.
