By Josephine McKennaROME, April 20 () -- Italy's first private high speed rail network made its inaugural voyage from Rome to Naples on Friday as a strike brought the public transport system to a halt in some parts of the capital. The one-billion-euro Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori (NTV) project is backed by leading entrepreneurs including Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, chairman of Ferrari, and Diego Della Valle, the billionaire behind the Tod's shoe empire.Montezemolo, former head of Italian auto giant FIAT, invited members of the Italian and international media on the train's first voyage to showcase the new vibrant red bullet train which travels at a speed of up to 300 km per hour.He said the rail project was a triumph and the partners were proud to introduce it to the Italian market at a time when Italy was facing market liberalization and labor reform. The fast train service, which will offer services to the public from April 28, will challenge the current state monopoly on intercity services with 25 trains and a network that will eventually connect nine Italian cities including Naples, Rome, Florence, Venice, Turin and Milan."This is the perfect answer to growth," Montezemolo told the press on Friday. "We expect to have 20 percent market share by the end of 2014."Montezemolo, a multimillionaire from an aristocratic family in Italy's north, said that the high-speed network called 'Italo', would employ 1,000 people -- many of whom were under the age of 30.He said the high speed NTV train was the most advanced in Europe and would offer the best in comfort as well as services such as free satellite TV and movies, and complimentary WiFi."Our service is dedicated to foreigners," he said. "When we did the research three year ago, 82 percent of tourists said they wanted to travel in Italy by train."While Montezemolo and his colleagues were celebrating the elegance and efficiency of the new private rail network, commuters were left stranded in Rome for several hours as buses and metro lines were halted by a strike to protest against the (Mario) Monti government's labor reforms.Even the millionaire businessman said he could not guarantee his services would escape industrial action."No one can guarantee anything. What we can guarantee is a train which is the best of them all with a number of free services."Work on the high speed rail project began in 2008 the year in which the founders received backing by Italy's Intesa Sanpaolo Bank and other partners as well as the French rail network SNCF.Asked if he was addicted to speed, the Ferrari chief admitted that he was."Yes. I think an entrepreneur has to take risks. For me the challenge was to start from scratch with the technology, innovation, young people and competitive prices."Gian Maria Gros-Pietro, a professor in business economics at Luiss University in Rome, said the new rail network would promote competition in Italy because 'Italo" planned to focus on service and quality."The service today is very good but it can be improved," Gros-Pietro said. "It could be more focused on different segments of clients and this is what competition can do. Italy will be the first country in Europe to have competition between rail operators."International transport giant Alstom is providing the trains for the high speed network and eight of them are being built in Italy.Pier Louis Bertina, managing director of Alstom in Italy, said the company was using the same technology it had used to break the world speed record at 575 km per hour in April 2007."I am not sure we have the ambition to change the market in Europe but this train is at the top of technology," Bertina said.Bertina said that Alstrom has doubled its capacity and saw potential for further growth in high speed networks around the world.Alstom recently signed a contract with French rail network SNCF for 40 additional double-deck Euroduplex high speed trains."I am sure there will be proposals in China, Turkey and the United States,"Bertina said. "Any opportunity is good for us. We are at the top of the trend."Giuseppe Sciarrone, chief executive of NTV, said that the new rail line will also compete with airlines, both Alitalia and low-cost carriers.Sciarrone did not comment on the antitrust verdict on Wednesday that ruled flagship carrier Alitalia must give up an unspecified number of slots on its monopoly Rome-Milan route by Oct. 28.
