VANCOUVER, Feb. 9 () -- Twice Olympic champion and six world titles holder Apolo Anton Ohno of the United States expects to go topping the men's short track podium at his third Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.                                                                                    Apolo Anton Ohno, Olympic Gold medal winner in speed skating, poses at the party for the launch of the BlackBerry Curve in Beverly Hills, California May 31, 2007. (/Reuters, File Photo)                          "I want to podium. I want to win races," said the 27-year-old at the U.S. team's press conference here on Tuesday. "I'm in the best physical shape of my life."    Ohno who won the men's 1,500m in Salt Lake City in 2002 and the men's 500m four years later in Turin, is looking forward to making it a hat-trick here near his homeland.    "We all have very high hopes. Short track is not a sport where you give predictions. But I definitely want to stand on the podium," he said.    The Seattle resident felt very comfortable competing in Vancouver, saying that he considered the border city of Canada a second home.    Ohno has been compared to speed skating legends Eric Heiden and Bonnie Blair, each of whom earned five Olympic gold medals for the U.S. in the 1980s and early 1990s, but he preferred not to shoulder the pressure.    "I try not to think about it. My goals are a little bit different than what the media would like to portray," said Ohno. "I'm just staying the course and just staying focused."    Ohno will start his Vancouver campaign on the opening day of the short track competitions in the men's 1,500m. He will also participate in the men's 500m, 1,000m and 5,000m relay.
NICOSIA, June 12 () -- Cyprus is only a step away from applying to the European Union (EU) for bailout support to help recapitalize the island's second largest bank, Finance Ministry sources said on Tuesday.A government spokesman said that no decision has yet been made, but the Finance Ministry sources said on condition of anonymity that an application may be imminent. The conflicting statements seem to give credibility to reports that there is a different approach on the issue by President Demetris Christofias and the Finance Ministry. The Finance Ministry sources dismissed reports that an application may be made to the EU over the next few days but they pointed out that a request for financial help will most probably be made over the weekend, when international markets are closed, as was the case with Spain.Cyprus has to raise 1.8 billion euros by the end of June to recapitalize Popular Bank after it reported heavy losses due to its holding a large amount of writedown Greek bonds. All three major Cyprus Banks have to give an indication by June 15 how they intend to recapitalize.Bank of Cyprus, the largest bank, and Hellenic Bank, which also suffered losses on account of their exposure to the Greek debt, are believed to be in a position to recapitalize by raising money from their stock holders.
