DAMASCUS, June 30 () -- The plan for a Syria-led transition agreed upon at an international meeting Saturday in Geneva on the Syrian crisis has been hailed by some political analysts in the unrest-torn country.World powers wrapped up the Action Group meeting on Syria by agreeing on a Syrian-led transition, which includes forming a unity government with members from both the current regime and opposition, but does not stipulate the ouster of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.George Gabbour, a Syrian ex-parliamentarian, said the results of the meeting were "encouraging," noting that the most important thing about the new plan is its implementation mechanisms. What really matters for Syrians is how the new decisions would be mirrored on ground, he said.Gabbour made it clear that halting violence is the prelude for a true national unity. For his side, Luai Hussian, an opponent, hailed the meeting by saying that the positive thing is the consensus among world powers on an approach to solve the 16-month-old crisis. He, however, expressed criticism on what he called "big titles, " saying that calling for a unity government requires plenty of explanations. He said the final communique released after the Geneva meeting needs more details and implementation mechanisms. In the joint communique, the meeting participants stressed on the sovereignty, independence and national unity as well as territorial integrity of Syria. The participants "are determined to work urgently and intensively to bring about an end to the violence and human rights abuses and the launch of a Syrian-led political process leading to a transition that meets the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people and enables them independently and democratically to determine their own future," said the communique. To secure these common objectives, the Action Group members identified steps and measures by the parties to secure the full implementation of the six-point plan and Security Council resolutions 2042 and 2043, including an immediate cessation of violence in all forms.More importantly, they also agreed on guidelines and principles for a political transition that meets the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people, and agreed on actions to implement the above in support of the UN-Arab League Joint Special Envoy Kofi Annan's efforts to facilitate a Syrian-led political process.
